PS4 shuts off on its own

Within the last week my PS4 has been shutting it self and either going into safe mode or restarting and telling me that I didn't shut it off properly. Is anyone else having this problem? And does anyone know what could be causing this?

  • Hi,

Welcome to the Forums!  Glad to have you here!  :)

My suggestion, if you haven't done it already, would be to check the power cable and socket on the wall, then if both are fine you may want to contact Support (link in my signature).

  • I have had this same issue since the week of February 17th.  Leave the PS4 in standby and it shuts itself off after a few minutes (not all the time, I'd say 3 out of 5).  If I shut the PS4 down completely, the next time I try to power on sometime I just get a beep a flashing blue light for about 5 seconds, a click sound and then it shuts itself off again.  Now my PS4 was absolutely fine until that 3rd week of February.  I did not have a single issue whether leaving in standby, remote play, or full power ups with the DS4.  Now I have an issue about 85% of the time I turn it on.  I either get the "unplugged" message or I get the blinking blue light have to hold the power button down for a manual power off, and when I power back up again the system seems fine.  On Saturday my system shut off on me for the first time when I was actually in the UI screens, just "click" and shut off, no lights.  Not sure if it was an isolated error or what.  Thing is I'm growing extremely tired of troubleshooting a brand new console.  Plus having to go through a 4-6 step process just to turn it on and forget about remote play... I don't even leave the system in standby anymore.

  • Yes- Mine would shut down after 2 hours of use at random times. It would make a buzz and shut off. When I would re-boot it, it would tell me it was not shut down properly. I tried the installation via safe mode/USB route and it did not work. My faith in Sony was shaken TBH, but I went into tech chat with a support guy and he was really helpful. I have to send my PS4 in to be repaired, and I'm waiting for my box in the mail to do so. My recommendation to you is to go into tech chat, while I may be wrong I'm betting you will eventually have to send yours in. Good luck man.

  • I had this problem too. After about 3 weeks of use, the PS4 would randomly shut itself off. Sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 2 hours. I got tired of it and returned it to Best Buy for a refund....

  • If it's my outlet thats shutting my ps4 off (a lot of my outlets and wireing are old in my house), is it possible that it could fry my ps4?(same outlet fyed my 360 during a lighting storm)

  • Yes, can confirm this also happened to me. Here's a video of what happens after it shuts down:

(blue light for half a second then a click and shuts off)

    YES!

I suggest unplugging your PS4 from the socket until you get a GOOD surge protector for your PS4. Make sure to get one that has a damage warranty on it, so that in the event of a surge if your devices get fried you can get reimbursment for some of it.

Not all of the issues with the PS4 randomly shutting off are related to old wiring in houses, however there is definitely a "known" issue that the PS4 will randomly shut off when it's in standby. Not sure if that's causing the issues where it randomly shuts off mid-game too.

Check Settings > Power Save Settings > Media Playback/General (Applications) and just turn both of those features OFF.

Then go to Set Functions Available in Standby Mode and enable all of them. This will hopefully ensure that standby mode stays enabled. I keep my USB Headset plugged in at all times, so I'm not sure if that's preventing my PS4 from shutting off on it's own, but that's what my PS4 settings are.

  • Honestly, Playstation should be paying for any delivery. Call them and make sure they do. I'm sending mine in today and they're paying for my postage (Australia)

  • Can it happen because we are using an extension wire? I think we have to connect it directly into the wall!

  • I'm having the same problem here, mine shuts down at random times no matter what i'm doing, it makes a buzz sound for around 3 seconds and then it shuts itself down, when re-boot it enters the recovery mode and after that it tells me it was not shut down properly. I already checked my power cable cable extension socket and no problems were found there, I tried to rebuild the database, initialize the PS4 and reinstall the system software, and nothing worked so far.... Does anybody knows what I can do?

  • my problem is that I bought in the U.S. when I was still living there but unfortunately I had to go back to my country ... I spoke with my regional technical support but they say they can only meet the consoles purchased nationally... and the US support service said that they can only provide service under the warranty within the US, shipping outside the US is not covered. So...

  • I had this issue all of the sudden on last thursday and friday, post 1.72 update and after 2-3 weeks of inactivity on my ps4. Anyways i decided to contact chat support and they told me to do the following:

Step 1 : unplug the PS4 for two full minutes and did that

Step 2 : go into Safe Mode and do Number 5 option which is Rebuild Database

And in case none of the above worked then do Step 7 on Safe mode. So i did all of the above  i switched the postition of the system, is vertical now and also directly connected to the outlet because i had it connected to an extension cord and my system is back to normal or at least stable since Friday night. I've been playing it everyday since that day to see if it happens again and so far no issues and hopefully it will stay that way. I still have until november to get a replacement so i'll keep following this  problem and update if its comes back. I also asked the support to dig into this and told em i think the problem is last update patch related because my system is a day one launch one and i had no issues with it until post 1.72 update So I 'd  recommend  to you guys do the same and see if  you can get it fixed like i did and hopefully all of you will get your system to work back to normal.

  • I love how Sony is keeping this issue so hush hush. I guess it's up to us as consumers to spread the word anyway we can. Contact the better business Bureau and any form of media whether social or national. I for one will be as I work in the news field and this type of business should not be tolerated. Completely disgraceful and intolerable in my opinion. I contacted Sony and they are informed of the issue but play stupid when you describe it. With my knowledge of electronics it seems like a power supply issue. My system shut down and will not turn on.. It has not been moved in months and is very well ventilated. They didn't learn from Microsoft and now they have the #1 selling console and could care less.

  • I am having the exact same problem for the second time. I bought my console on Dec 21 2013 and I had this problem come up on my birthday in March. I went to go turn the unit on and it would not turn on anymore (That was a great way to start my bday...). The blue light would come on and then shut off after a second or 2. I called Sony and they had me send my unit in and they said they were sending me a new unit to replace it. I received the replacement unit in like 2 weeks and it had been working fine for a while. Just in the last 2 days this unit started powering itself off while in standby mode. Yesterday was the first time it shut off on me while I was playing. I called Sony again and they are going to be going through the same process of sending me a box so I can send my PS4 to them, and then they will be sending me yet another unit. I asked the tech support if this was a common issue and she blatantly told me that it was, and that that they were looking at making this issue non-existent in there next hardware version. She alluded to the fact that if I continue to have this problem they could potentially send me the new hardware revision when it comes out should this problem happen again.

It is also worth noting that it seems like my unit works again when left unplugged from the outlet for a few hours. However even after it started working, a few hours of playing and it shut off on me again and it started having the same symptoms. This morning I plugged it back in and it was working again. I don't think the unit is overheating as it is in a well ventilated area. The vents have a standard amount of dust and such in it. I will use my PS4 until i receive the return box and then I will be sending it in. Will most definitely be buying the extended warranty after all this mess....

  • I had the same problem, shutting down randomly from between 10-60 minutes of play. The first time it did it, it corrupted the hard drive so badly I could not format it. Even in my PC. So I put a spare drive in and threw the old one away .BIG MISTAKE .Sony will not honour the warrenty if the original drive is not present ( as I found out later ,when I phoned for a return ).They wanted to charge me £175 for repair. So I thought now that it was out of warrenty I might as well open it and clean out any dust. Stripped it down to the motherboard ,put new Arctic silver thermal paste on the CPU and a drip on each memory chip .Re assembled it and it has NOT SHUT DOWN SINCE. I,ve been hammering Destiny for about 3-4 hours a day for the last 2 weeks with out a problem. One thing I,ve noticed is the case is now a lot cooler and the fan output is hotter. So I think its getting rid of the heat a lot better. I'm not saying for anyone to try this but it worked for me.

That is false. Upgrading the HDD doesn't void your warranty and Sony doesn't care if the HDD in the system is the stock one or not. There must be something you're not telling us.

  • THIS IS NOT FALSE. Yes you can change you hard drive without voiding your warranty. If you ever have to send your ps4 back for repair it needs the original HDD back in it. The guy I spoke to said the HDD and console are serial linked. I offered to buy a replacement HDD but he said that was not an option. I have told you everything ,If you choose not to believe that's up to you. I'm not lying though. I,ve got no reason too.

      can you weigh in here?

Hey there. Hopefully I can clear up a bit of the confusion for you. Your warranty is not void when you upgrade your hard drive. When you send in your PS4 however we always recommend you send the console in with the default hard drive. Its not that we will not take the PS4 with your upgraded hard drive, its that there is no guarantee you will get it back with the same hard drive in it. This is because to determine the issue often times the console is restored to default settings, this includes hardware. We like to ensure that you keep everything that is yours, which is also why we usually don't recommend you send the controller with the console if its functioning properly.

I am also fairly sure that SCEE has similar conditions when servicing PS4s. However opening the console as you did will indeed void the warranty. That being said, I'm glad its working for you now!
