5.0 update victims ... Very disappointed in Sony.

So recently I as have many others, downloaded update 5.0 only to have they're console rendered pretty much useless... E-801809a8 errored.

I waited until now hoping Sony would come up with a fix for this to relieve many upset gamers of they're stress. Upon speaking with support I was told that that there is no fix for this.. they are still investigating. However they would look at my system for $99 and assess or fix which may require additional payment. Because like many my blue ray drive was broken and removed, and I no longer posses it....

Okay so after hearing I more or less have to pay this money in order to use my console, I asked if I would be credited at least the time of subscription lost since the release of 5.0. The answer was simply no... no credit, no refund. All they could do is just stop my auto renewal....

For all who are going through what I am, I feel bad for you as Sony deliberately released this update, forced us to DL it, and rendered our systems useless. And upon all that offer no solution or show any remorse  towards it.... Unless of course you want to pay more money them... if it wasn't Sony, I would label this a straight up scam to many. Because it's Sony, I'm just going to call it a very Sad show of appreciation to those who support them. More like a slap in the face..... anyways that's the update, if anybody was still wondering on this issue... that is their answer.

  • A few (maybe two or three) people here have mentioned having problems with the 5.0 update -- most people have NOT had a problem. As you have stated that you have a hardware problem with your PS4, I'm thinking this might be the basis for your trouble with 5.0, as well as others with similar difficulties.

It sounds reasonable to me that Sony would charge you for evaluating the problems with your system, since it is unlikely that the update is the cause. Are you looking for a handout from Sony? That won't happen.

This search might have more information.

This error code might be related to a problem with built-in blu-ray disk reader.

  • Only a few people out of 60 million are having a problem? Yeah it must be sony's update *rollseyes*

My system is and has been fine.

  • "Because like many my blue ray drive was broken and removed, and I no longer posses it...."  Update 5.0 broke your Blu-Ray Drive, took it out of your console and tossed it out the window? Now you no longer have a Blu-Ray Drive?

    Please do tell us more!!

  • If it was said update. Everyone with the same version of PS4 you own would have the same proble. Could be thousands to millions of units. Sorry to say its not the update that is your poblem.

  • Once again, like 10 people posted on here.... (random number outta my arse but ya... seen like.... TWO threads) about this. Have you HEARD of coincidence? Hardware fails DAILY to at least one person on the planet.... Even if they're barely used (like they are now with full installs and the console only uses it for a minute when a game starts...... unless you're using your GAME console to constantly play movie discs), disc drives tend to fail eventually. It happened to my first PS2... now I have two PS2's just in case. Ya they're built better now and I'm not too worried about my PS3 Slim or my launch style PS4 (which is WORKING FINE after 5.0), but it can still happen. And of course, it happens to a few people on update day and they blame the update..... what else is new.

Ya software controls the hardware, but if the software was going to screw up the drives (not physically, but make them unable to work cause of a code screw-up) on IDENTICAL CONSOLES in MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of homes, don't you think this would've blown up more? Don't you think they would've noticed on their consoles at Sony while testing the update that the freakign drive wasnt' working? A real blow-up's only happened like ONCE since the PS4 released.... and they fixed it.

  • There are no " victims ". And if something like this is sooooooo upsetting to you, I suggest you find a nice quiet place and stop interacting with the world. Maybe switch to coloring books and thinking about Unicorns and kitty cats.

If the problem is as big as you think it is, a lot more people would be complaining about it.  Unfortunatly there is always a chance that something may go wrong during the update process that effects a few people..

  • Apparently all the trolls on here haven't read all the articles addressing this widespread issue. If it didn't affect you, congrats. But the problem is very real and it isn't the first time, hence why he no longer has his blue ray drive. I no longer have mine as well due to the last time this happened and was all over headlines. Sony's sales must be down so they decided to crash the systems once again. Wake up people. If they haven't scammed you yet, they will.

@LeoLioness congratulations on a completely idiotic post.  Well done.  "Widespread" is the issue?  How many people are affected out of the millions and millions of consoles sold?  Link it.....go ahead, make our day....

  • So.. sales are down (which makes total sense, since everyone has a PS4 by now), so they somehow target specific consoles (one person's launch console dies while mine doesn't for instance) to kill the drive with the update? Please explain to me how they do that with the code (OS update) they push out when every console is identical.... Most people have the launch style PS4, not the slim or PRo... so I'm sure some of these VERY FEW instances are the same console as mine. Please explain how mine wasn't affected the same way..... unless their hardware (nothing to do with the update) just decided to fail on THAT day. These arent' PC's with 1000 different configurations of parts..... Please think before you speak.

Edit: I was responding to Leo btw. I hate this site now, still cant' even quote ffs....

HRRMM? I own a version of the effected model and my console works just fine. Must be the firmware then right seeing Mine still works with said update yet you claim mine should be dead and its not. Please learn how things work before posting like this. There is no wide spread issue and you obviously have no clue how firmware and update to said firmware even work with the posts you are making. Ill repeat if the firmware was to cause the issue you wouldnt get one or two console failures you get every console set up with that exact hardware set up to fail again thousands if not millions of units to fail due to this. not just one or two.

    Hi all,

No guarantee if this fixes the issue, but Sony has today released system software update 5.01 for the PS4. If the PS4 is unable to be updated within the system itself, you can use a USB drive to install the update file manually. More info on how to do this on the System Software Hub forum post.

I'd be curious to hear back from someone who has been having this issue to see if 5.01 resolves it.

  • Sales are down so they are killing consoles?

How stupid do you have to be to think people would buy another console from a company that installs kill switches in their products?

I've always loved when morons would hypothesize that Sony was killing consoles to get you to buy a new one or the most current one.

Companies don’t put kill switches in there devices,  they can get in trouble if they did that,

one time to combat piracy on the Commodore 64 made a copy protection that caused the disc drive to spin so fast it effectively burned out the motor of the drive, they were sued and lost.. the court basically told them they had no right to cause damage to the persons computer.

look chances are something was wrong with the system, and honestly as I said before with all updates there is always a chance something may go wrong with the update process.

  • :^/ Most of the profit from the video game business comes from the games, and not from the consoles, themselves. Indeed, many consoles are sold at a loss, just to get them into your house. Especially at laungh. This is the company effectively buying market share. They more than make it back through increased game sales.

For a manufacturer to sabotage a console would mean a reduction in game sales more than any increase in console sales. No, it makes no sense to do that.

As for headlines, I'm online quite a bit and haven't seen any mention of the issue outside of this forum. If you have a link to share, that would be welcome.

  • @LeoLioness

Having a different opinion, or suggesting that the OP's problem may be different from what he thinks, is not being a troll.

P.S. Because a few people are willing to complain or -- even make a YouTube video -- does not mean the problem is wide-spread.

  • ^ lol Violet damn, read slower.... Black never said it was widespread. First half of his post was a quote from Leo.  IF that didnt' dawn on you, his post would look like he was contradicting himself by sayign in the last half that it's NOT widespread....

  • This is a simple blu-ray error. Fix your console and the error will go away.

So let me get this straight; Sony, who doesn't make money off the console because it's a LOSS LEADER and they make money on the games that go with the console, want to "crash the systems once again", so they can sell consoles to the people who've already bought them instead of trying to sell systems to whom ever may not have them already there by increasing the user base, so they can buy the same number of games they were going to buy anyway, and quite literally zero increase in game sales and no additional revenue "because reasons"?

There's only one way to describe that pure, unadulterated example of "gamer logic".

  • with the new laws that state individuals cant sue companies anymore....why couldnt Sony do a kill switch for base ps4s?...there would be no repercussion and no aftermath...it would be business as usual becuase no litigation cuold ever be filed. except Sony could turn around and sue any customers claiming that their console was kill switched-by claiming slander. im guessing they can afford it

  • I'd swear that crap is only for banks, but seriously.... are you dumb? Even if Sony killed all the base launch model PS4's out there like mine (which is MOST OF THEM) and they managed to get around having their pants sued off, do you think anyone would buy ANYTHING from Sony after that?

  • @CaptainAlbator

Actually the PS4 isn't a loss leader, they do make a couple bucks per console but not a lot.

Obviously the OP has no clue on what has happened and thinks since it happened to them it is happening to everyone. New forum look, same troll issues.
