Serious board spam issues

I'm sure it goes without saying but 4 pages of bot spam is rough.

  • This is unreal. Is it usually this bad?

  • It's usually not as bad as what I saw this morning but the spam is a regular thing.

  • It is regular, but yea, this morning was ridiculous...

Which is why I suggest everyone migrate to the psabr.boards.net ;)

  • I usually try and report it, but when it gets to days where there's almost 10 pages of it, I just throw up my hands and leave it. The mods do tend to respond quickly to reports, but the spam just keeps coming for hours.

There needs to be a preventative measure - perhaps some sort of post limit that automatically bans your account if you go over it (I'm talking something like posting about 5 threads in the space of a minute, which the spambot can do, and frequently does, but none of us realistically can), or if that doesn't work, some sort of captcha system. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather fill out a captcha every time I post instead of seeing 13 pages of spam every other day.

Mods, any word on whether or not either of the above solutions could be implemented?

Can relate. It's gotten to that point.

Been reporting when I can. But the stuff keeps on coming O_O.

Captcha would be a start. It would be hard for any spam bots to be able to get past it.

Edit: Just checked again and it's looking a lot better.

  • This spam bot has targeted other sections in the Playstation forums for many, many months. The bot has been targeting this section in particular for a few months already. The mods are already well aware of this situation and are still addressing this issue by creating new tactics to handle this.

The direct way to handle this is to report the spam. There is a report button on the bottom right side of each post. Simply report the spam thread and say that it is a spam bot flooding the forum. You do not need to report each individual spam thread; simply say that it is flooding the PSASBR forum. Reporting will notify a moderator, who will handle the spam. Please remember thatit may take time for a mod to respond it reports. Certain times of the day and weekends are important factors, from what is seen, that decides how quick a mod would respond.

Yep. Only been reporting one of each spammer.

Noticed that too. Sometimes it takes as long as 2 hours to get rid of it. Been taking into account that maybe they're taking care of more of it behind the scenes too since there are more of them that we don't see at all. But it does get some what frustrating.

Oh, this I know about. I tend to only report one, usually with a note of how bad the situation is if it goes on for millions of pages. My issue is when I go away for ten minutes, come back and find that all the spam was deleted...and was then replaced with more spam that then needs to be reported again.

I don't begrudge the mods in all of this. There's probably a limited number of them, and they're only human too, so they can only do so much in the face of a relentless bot that can post faster than they can delete. This is why I feel there needs to be a relatively strict preventative measure across the PS boards to deal with it without the mods needing to waste what usually amounts to several hours of their day dealing with it. Like I said, a post limit (especially a thread creation limit) and perhaps a captcha would be good things to implement. And I'd like to hear a mod's opinion on these things, and whether or not they're viable solutions with this board system.

These are some good suggestions that I can pass along, or course I can't guarantee any implementation. As it stands, we have a spam filter which usually catches a lot of the spam posts but its never perfect in catching everything. As time goes on, we've been tweaking the filter to better tailor it for catching the spam posts, but as you all have noticed, the bot posts get relentless. We really appreciate when you guys report spam posts to help our team jump on it as quickly as possible.

The spam seems to hit most boards of the forums, though some sections get hit harder than others. Also, thanks for being patient as we work to keep the board clear, I know its rough some mornings.
